For more than 150 years, John Danks & Son has been a cornerstone of Australia’s plumbing and hardware industry. Known to many simply as “Danks Plumbing,” the company played a pivotal role in shaping plumbing supply and hardware distribution across the country.
Founded in 1859, John Danks & Son grew from a traditional merchant operation into one of Australia’s most recognisable plumbing suppliers and then evolved to be a major hardware wholesaler. Through decades of innovation, expansion, and adaptation to market changes, Danks established itself as a trusted name among tradespeople, builders, and hardware retailers.
The company expanded beyond wholesale plumbing, developing and supporting retail banner groups including Home Timber & Hardware, Thrifty-Link Hardware and Plants Plus, providing branding, marketing and buying power to independently owned stores across Australia.
In 2016, Danks’ wholesale and retail operations were acquired by Metcash (seven years after the acquisition by Woolworths and Lowe’s), integrating the network into a larger national distribution framework. Today, many former Danks-affiliated stores operate under the Mitre 10 banner, continuing the legacy of independent hardware retailing that Danks helped pioneer.
