DatacomIT is currently undertaking a major digitisation project for VicTrack, aimed at preserving and digitally enhancing access to thousands of historically valuable railway records.
These documents, many of which are stored on microfilm and microfiche, include detailed railway infrastructure plans, land surveys, and building service layouts such as water and sewage systems.
VicTrack is the custodian of Victoria’s railway land, assets, and infrastructure. With origins dating back to the early days of the state’s rail development, VicTrack plays a vital role in supporting public transport and managing transport-related land across Victoria. Its historical records offer unique insights into over a century of transport planning, engineering, and land use.
As part of this project, DatacomIT is carefully digitising these archival materials to ensure they are preserved and made accessible in modern formats. Once digitised, the records will be linked to VicTrack’s internal systems to support:
- Asset management and long-term infrastructure planning
- Access to historical land and property information
- Identification of legacy building services critical to safety and compliance
“We’re proud to support VicTrack in preserving this unique and valuable collection,” said Eamonn Donohoe, General Manager at DatacomIT. “Through digitisation, we’re helping unlock historical data that still plays an active role in current infrastructure management.”
The process includes high-resolution scanning, precise metadata capture, and formatting for seamless integration into VicTrack’s digital platforms. This initiative ensures long-term preservation while enabling faster, more efficient access to historical data, bridging Victoria’s rail past with its transport future.
