DatacomIT utilises a wide range of unique processes and procedures to enable the recovery and preservation of data from magnetic tape media.

DatacomIT has extensive experience in the successful retrieval of data from media that has been affected by hardware malfunctions, age, stiction, physical damage (including cut, stretched, and mangled tape), and also for media that has endured improper environmental storage and handling.

One of the greatest issues affecting older tape media is “Stiction”. Stiction is a condition caused through the degradation of the binder layer on magnetic tape. Typically this condition is as a result of the tape absorbing moisture, resulting in a chemical reaction within the tape binder causing it to soften.

As a result this causes the tape to stick to the read/write heads, transport drive, and also to the tape itself. This condition can therefore ultimately result in the catastrophic loss of data.

In addressing this issue DatacomIT has developed a proprietary approach that ensures the maximum amount of data is recovered from affected media.

This approach involves a physical heat treatment and cleaning process that then allows for the safe insertion and processing within the DatacomIT specialised tape drives.

During the transcription process, DatacomIT utilises its proprietary software to read and process the data in a manner that has enabled us to retrieve data where other solutions and systems have failed.
